Love as Laughter and Lync frontman Sam Jayne dies aged 46
Sam Jayne, best known as the frontman of Love as Laughter and Lync, has died. He was 46.
Per Pitchfork, Jayne was reported missing earlier this week, and was last seen on December 6 in Brooklyn, according to social media posts from friends and collaborators. The New York Police Department subsequently launched a search campaign and found Jayne in his car. A preliminary investigations showed no “signs of criminality”.
Jayne’s bandmate, Zeke Howard, confirmed the news in a post shared on Love as Laughter’s Facebook page. “The search for Sam Jayne has concluded and our hearts are broken,” the drummer wrote.
“Our dear Sam is no longer with us but his memory and impact will endure. Please respect the privacy of the family at this time.”

Jayne co-founded the Olympia, Washington post-hardcore band Lync in the 90s. The group went on to release singles on Magic Pail, Candy Ass, Landspeed and K Records before releasing their sole full-length album, These Are Not Fall Colors. Lync then disbanded in 1994.
Following the band’s breakup, Jayne founded Love as Laughter. The band released a number of studio albums over the years, the latest of which was 2008’s Holy. Thereafter, Love as Laughter continued to release EPs and singles, dropping Greks II: Slight Return in 2013 and Lazy Soldier B/W Oasis in 2015.
Robin Pecknold, vocalist of Fleet Foxes, has paid tribute to Jayne on Instagram. “Rest in peace, Sam,” he wrote. “You didn’t know it but you were an elusive and formatively inspiring hero to me and you touched so many of the lives of the people we love. You were Sam fucking Jayne. Fuck.”
