Morello recently opened up about the topic in an interview with Uncut Magazine. Responding to a fan’s question about whether socialism can “still work and even be accepted again” in this current cultural and political climate, Morello readily agreed to the notion. He also took shots at capitalism, describing the system’s failures in handling many of today’s socio-economic issues.
“I mean, I think [socialism is] a necessity, to save the planet,” the 56-year-old said. “Look at how capitalism has responded to the global pandemic – it’s a disaster. Look at how capitalism has responded to the impending environmental crisis – it’s a disaster. Look at how capitalism has responded to racism and anti-immigrant sentiment in the 21st century – it’s a disaster.”
Morello then explained, however, that more important than a system or a philosophy, is a solution that ultimately benefits mankind and the Earth. “I think that we have to look for solutions that serve humanity and the planet, and you can put whatever ism you want to it,” the guitarist said. “That’s less important than the goal of a more humane, just, decent and sustainable earth.
Earlier this month, Morello hit back at critics who’ve lamented his overuse of effects pedals. In an interview with Guitar World, however, he explained that he’s only used the same wah, whammy, delay, and phaser for the past three decades. “I’ve been accused countless times of using a ton of effects – but I’ve used the same four pedals for the last 30 years,” he said. “It’s just about finding different applications for the same old shit.”
In October, Morello released a photo memoir titled Whatever It Takes through Genesis Publications. It spans his entire six-string journey, from his first guitar to present day, complete with commentary, handwritten written notes and never-before-seen set lists.
