Tesla owner enjoys an afternoon of guitar practice – while allegedly driving 60mph on the motorway
A Tesla can drive, steer and even park itself… but can it play guitar? Unfortunately, no – car manufacturers haven’t crafted a musically proficient vehicle just yet. But don’t be disheartened! That just means that it’s down to us humans to pick up the slack. If your car is doing all the driving, why sit idly, twiddling your thumbs, when you could be putting them to good use working on your chord progressions?
For legal reasons, we don’t actually condone doing that. In fact, one London driver has gotten in trouble with the law after allegedly playing guitar while zooming down the M25 at 60mph. We can only assume which track he was allegedly playing in that moment – perhaps a foreshadowing Smoke On The Water before being plunged into hot water? Or Sammy Hagar’s ode to reckless driving, I Can’t Drive 55?

Surrey Police shamed the driver for his impromptu car set on Instagram. According to the Surrey Police, they received a call from a member of the public claiming to have seen a Tesla driver “playing a guitar whilst driving on the M25 at 60mph in the Reigate area”.

You may be wondering how this is possible – well, even futuristic cars have their limitations. Namely, a Tesla car will only engage its autopilot functions if it detects a driver within the car. In order to detect a driver, a series of cameras, sensors and weight-monitoring functions are in place… and they’re dangerously simple to bypass.
Back in June, it emerged that Tesla ‘drivers’ were buying tiny doll heads to trick their cars. While a few iterations appeared on the market, the core idea was to line up the doll head so it looked like the driver’s actual head – then the car believed that the owner was looking up at the road, and would continue self-driving.

But how did this Surrey Tesla driver bypass his car’s sensors? Once the driver was intercepted, the police searched his car and discovered that he had covered the rearview mirror camera, as well as putting a weight on his steering wheel. “He had covered the interior camera which checks driver attention and he had used a weighted device in the steering wheel to make the car think the driver was holding the wheel,” the post explains.
According to the police, the driver has been reported to court for his driving, citing it as an act of “driving without due care or attention”. His licensing authority has reportedly also been made aware of the case, as he apparently works as a “private hire driver”. Now, driver truly can’t drive 55… or, potentially, ever again.
