“That’s not anything deliberate or worked on”: David Gilmour on the magic behind his unique guitar sound

Just can’t get that David Gilmour lick down perfectly no matter how hard you practice? Well, don’t worry, for even the legend himself admits that he has no idea how it all happens.
In a new interview with Rick Beato, the Pink Floyd guitarist and songwriter speaks about his creative process, and the way he, too, is puzzled by how his sound comes together.

“There’s just so many things about how you strike the string that doesn’t sound like anyone else,” Beato begins. To which Gilmour responds: “I don’t know how that happens. That’s not anything deliberate or worked on. It’s just my taste as to how you want it to sound and how to bend things.”
“I mean, if I ever hear people doing the solo to Comfortably Numb, or something like that, which obviously comes up on Facebook and things once in a while, there are things that other people just don’t have quite perfect — if you’re talking about perfection in these matters.”
The same applies to Gilmour’s songwriting approach, which according to him, is more of an art than a science.
“Yeah, I can’t pin that. I can’t pin down exactly how that all works,” he says. “I don’t overthink these processes. I just do them as they feel natural at the time. And in the past, I think it’s known that I have, on occasion, found a solo a bit frustrating, and I’ve then sung a tune, and then played the tune afterwards that I had sung, because it’s easier with the voice to go off-piste and find new melodies and stuff.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Gilmour also opens up about his struggles when it comes to playing fast guitar solos, saying: “I wasn’t gifted with enormous speed on the guitar.”
“There were years when I was younger where I thought I could get that if I practiced enough. But it just wasn’t ever really going to happen,” the guitarist admits.
