The documentary, directed by Grohl and produced by Foo Fighters, features interviews with an enormous cast of rock musicians. Names appearing in the film include Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee, Pat Smear, Ringo Starr, Flea, Brian Johnson, St. Vincent, Slash, Duff McKagan, Ben Harper, The Edge, Mike Watt, Ian Mackaye, Starcrawler, RadKey, Exene Cervenka, Tony Kanal, DH Peligro, Charlie Gabriel, Jennifer Finch, Dave Lombardo, Kira Roessler, Pete Stahl, Lars Ulrich, and Steven Tyler.
Grohl said of What Drives Us in a statement: “This film is my love letter to every musician that has ever jumped in an old van with their friends and left it all behind for the simple reward of playing music.
“What started as a project to pull back the curtain on the DIY logistics of stuffing all of your friends and equipment into a small space for months on end eventually turned into an exploration of ‘why?’ What drives us?’”
The film will arrive exclusively on The Coda Collection for those in the USA, and on Amazon Prime Video for those in “select global markets,” beginning 30 April.

The announcement follows that of Dave Grohl’s new memoir book, The Storyteller. As its name implies, the book is a collection of stories from Grohl’s rather unique career, across which he’s played in some of the biggest bands on the planet. The work will span from Grohl’s childhood, to him leaving home at 18, to his days as a drummer for Nirvana to his adventures around the world fronting the Foo Fighters.
