“Would they have that same attention if they weren’t wearing big clown noses?”: Why Devin Townsend isn’t sold on viral guitar duo Angine de Poitrine
Love them or hate them, Angine de Poitrine have become one of guitar’s biggest talking points this year.
The mysterious Quebec math rock duo have won admirers ranging from Dave Grohl to countless KEXP viewers, but Devin Townsend isn’t quite buying into the hype just yet.
Speaking on Jorge Botas’ Metal Global podcast, the guitarist – who earlier this year released his new album The Moth, admits it’s not so much the music that’s caught his attention, but the buzz surrounding the band’s now-iconic paper-mache masks.

“It just makes me crazy because it’s the mask thing,” says Townsend. “It’s like he’s got a big polka dot nose and so everybody really likes it.”
The guitarist is quick to point out that he isn’t dismissing the music itself.
“Okay, first off, I haven’t listened to it enough to give an accurate musical assessment of it,” he says. “It’s not to say that they’re not cool, but would they have that same attention if they weren’t wearing big clown noses?”
Ironically, Townsend admits the band’s meteoric rise has almost had the opposite effect on him.
“I mean, I should listen to them. I had so many people send them to me. At the same time I just refuse to listen to it,” he admits.
“My perspective on it is only that I’ve been irritated by it so far. But there are people in my life who are close to me who say it’s very good. So please take my assessment of it with a grain of salt.”
The viral duo – guitarist Khn and drummer Klek – shot to fame this February after their KEXP session racked up millions of views, earning praise for their knotty microtonal riffs as well as their distinctive masked aesthetic.
Townsend, meanwhile, recently announced a solo tour in support of his latest album, The Moth.
