“What are you talking about, Baldini? Now you have more room”: Anthrax’s Scott Ian on how touring with Dimebag Darrell taught him “how to drink”
Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says touring with Pantera in the late 1990s was where he truly learned to drink and that Dimebag Darrell was his teacher in the trade…
Ian, 62, recalls the tour in a new interview with Metal Hammer, describing the 1997-98 run as “fucking chaos”. His clearest memory is of being sick after a night of heavy drinking, opening the bathroom door to find Dimebag waiting with another shot. When Ian pointed out that he had just thrown up, the Pantera guitarist brushed it off with a nickname and a piece of logic: “What are you talking about Baldini? Now you just have more room.”

Ian also remembers the tour buses. He would sometimes hop on the one shared by Dimebag and his drummer brother Vinnie Paul, which seemed a great idea at 3am. By 7am, he said, the party was still going and the pair had spent hours watching the same live Kiss videos on loop.
Dimebag’s reputation as a drinker was well established. He had his own signature drink, the Black Tooth Grin, named after a Megadeth lyric. In 2022, Machine Head’s Robb Flynn recounted a night when a very drunk Dimebag smashed one of his guitars into the floor, then went onstage and played a flawless show.
Dimebag was shot dead on stage in 2004, aged 38, while performing with Damageplan, the band he formed with Vinnie Paul after Pantera split.
The friendship between the two bands produced music as well as stories. Dimebag contributed guest solos to six Anthrax songs across three albums: Fueled and King Size on 1995’s Stomp 442, Inside Out and Born Again Idiot on 1998’s Vol. 8: The Threat Is Real and Strap It On and Cadillac Rock Box on 2003’s We’ve Come For You All.
Anthrax released their new album, Cursum Perficio, through Nuclear Blast last month. Parts were recorded at Studio 606, the California studio owned by Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl. The band have no tour dates announced, having recently played a run of shows supporting Iron Maiden.
