“A bottle rocket of creative spirit” and a “motherf**ker on six strings”: The guitar world pays tribute to Mastodon’s Brent Hinds

The music world has been paying tribute to Brent Hinds – Mastodon guitarist from the band’s formation in 2000 until earlier this year – after he was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in Atlanta earlier this week.
A police report detailed how the driver of a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn at an intersection. Hinds was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle at the time. His death was confirmed to Atlanta News First by the Fulton County medical examiner’s office.
His former Mastodon bandmates were first to pay tribute upon hearing the tragic news, writing: “We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief…
“Last night, Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many.”

Now, many other musicians from the metal and wider music worlds have paid tribute, including Slash, Zakk Wylde, Tool, Trivium, Opeth and many more.
In a post on social media, Black Label Society frontman and longtime Ozzy Osbourne collaborator Zakk Wylde writes: ““God bless Brent Hinds,” while Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash simply writes: “RIP.”

Meanwhile, Trivium frontman Matt Heafy says Hinds was “definitely one of the earlier heroes of mine” after his band and Mastodon both played at the 2005 edition of Ozzfest.
“Years later when touring together on the Slayer/Trivium co-headlining tour with Mastodon and Amon Amarth, he sat with me in our dressing room and played on acoustic and sang to me alone, a song that he had written but never played for anyone – after telling me that after all these years; we’ve proven ourselves and that he respected me/us. There weren’t many like this man. That’s for sure. Rest in peace. Rest in power.”

Opeth call Hinds an “incredible musician” and a “force of nature”, adding that they are “overwhelmed by shock”.

“This one hits particularly close to home,” write Tool, “as Brent was not only a fellow musician, who at times shared the stage with the guys as a guest guitarist, but was also a good friend outside the tour venues. With his creative output and valued friendship, though, he passed onto another plane. Rest assured that he will not be forgotten on this one.”
Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton says Hinds was a “bottle rocket of creative spirit and emotion”, adding: “His skill with sarcasm was top-tier. He would absolutely crack me up with his meandering, stream of consciousness banter.
“Brent’s perspective was as peculiar as it was intriguing… sometimes maddening, sometimes visionary. Then, just when he’d be almost to outer space, he’d touch back down for a minute with a kind word or thoughtful observation shot directly out of a gentle, loving heart that was all the while keeping time amidst the kaleidoscopic chaos of his energy.
And, of course, Brent was a motherfucker on six strings. He heard things that nobody else heard… so he’d bring them to life so that we could all hear them too.
“I’m so grateful to have known him.  I’m grateful for how he pushed me creatively as a player.  And I’m grateful to have called him my friend. We fuckin love you dude. Godspeed.”
