The amp is the latest addition to the Katana range, which BOSS launched in 2016 for guitar and bass.
Sound and design
The Katana-25 pairs a custom eight-inch speaker with an open-back cabinet and a 25-watt reactive analog power section. Boss says it is built on its Tube Logic design approach, which aims to capture the feel and response of a tube amp.
Players get six amp characters covering pop, blues, country, classic rock and high-gain metal. One is voiced for acoustic-electric instruments. There are also more than 60 effects from the Boss library, with up to five usable at once.
Presets and controls
The amp has 20 factory presets and 10 empty slots for custom tones. Players can recall memories and adjust basic preamp and effects parameters from the panel without the app. There’s also a tap tempo button for delay effects and a built in tuner.
A Power Control switch toggles between full power and a half-watt mode, intended to give a cranked-amp feel at bedroom volumes. BOSS says the feature is inspired by its stage-class Katana models.
Bluetooth and Tone Studio
Onboard Bluetooth lets players stream songs from a phone or tablet to jam along and connects the amp to the BOSS Tone Studio app. The app offers more detailed effects editing and access to BOSS Tone Exchange, where users can download new sounds.
Tone Studio’s Session feature lets players browse and play YouTube videos in the app. They can also set points on a song’s timeline to trigger automatic memory changes during playback.
