Rising to prominence for his contributions to Jackson Browne’s 1977 multi-platinum album Running On Empty, Lindley passed away at the age of 78 on 3 March. Lindsey’s cause of death has yet to be revealed, but the multi-instrumentalist announced a fundraiser to cover his medical expenses for an undisclosed illness earlier this year.
In the wake of Lindley’s passing, his peers and admirers have taken to social media to pay tribute, with Joe Bonamassa, Graham Nash and more offering their praise for Lindsey. “Rest in Peace to one of the greatest ever to ever play music. David Lindley changed the game for all of us,” Bonamassa wrote in his tribute.
One-time collaborator Graham Nash called Lindley “One of the most talented musicians there has ever been” in an Instagram post, adding, “David could play pretty much any instrument you put in front of him with incredible versatility and expression. He was truly a musician’s musician and has been admired with awe and respect for such a long time now.”
“He was also a wonderful person and a friend. He is going to be very missed. My heart and love go out to his family and to everyone who loved him so.”
Legendary horror author Stephen King also paid tribute to Lindley in a short post, writing, “So sorry to hear the great David Lindley has passed away. The world has lost a brilliant musician.”

It’s so sad to hear of David Lindley’s passing. He was a giant among musicians. Always his unique sound and style gave him away in one note. My thoughts are with his family.
