“He demands genius, and you’ve got to deliver”: Tom Bukovac on working with Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart

Guitar session wizard Tom Bukovac has revealed that Dave Stewart of Eurythmics is working on a musical about his life, sharing that the upcoming project will consist of many theatrical elements.
“I’ve just finished the first week of that Dave Stewart project, and as always it’s a carnival,” Bukovac said on the latest episode of Homeskoolin’, which aired 30 August. “He’s making a musical about his life, so we’re making all this crazy theatrical music – a lot of weird stuff.”
The two have worked together on multiple occasions in the past, both in the recording studio and onstage. Bukovac lent his guitar playing talents to Stewart’s 2011 solo record The Blackbird Diaries, as well as Joss Stone’s LP1 which Stewart co-produced.
Offering fans some insight on what it was like to work with Stewart, particularly on his latest project, Bukovac said: “You never know what you’re gonna be doing with him, you gotta work quickly; he demands genius. And you’ve got to deliver, whether you’re playing ukulele, slide guitar, 12-string acoustic – it’s pretty fun but you have to stay on your toes”
Elsewhere in the episode, Bukovac answered a fan question about learning multiple instruments, relating it to his different roles on Stewart’s new musical. “I think it’s good to have guys around that play a lot of different things, because they seem to be more creative,” he said. “I find that some of the best sessions I’m ever on are when you have a bunch of guys that play a bunch of different instruments. They think like producers.”
