“The only one of its kind in the world”: Les Paul Recording Studio opens in LA, boasting the 8-track console Les Paul built himself in the ’50s

The Les Paul Recording Studio – a state-of-the-art recording facility honouring electric guitar pioneer Les Paul – has opened in Hollywood, California.
Located in the famous United Recording building at 6050 Sunset Boulevard, the facility boasts “meticulously restored” original equipment, including the custom eight-channel mixing console built in the ’60s by Les Paul himself and Rein Narma, as well as modern pieces of gear, too.

Said console boasts in-line equalisation and vibrato effects that were cutting-edge for its time. Alongside this sits the first 8-track recorder ever produced – Paul’s Ampex 5258 Sel-Sync machine, known familiarly as “The Octopus”.

This restored equipment serves as an homage to Les Paul’s pioneering recording techniques which had had a profound and lasting impact on the music industry. Originally using this technology in a home studio, Paul was able to create layered guitar sounds and vocal harmonies with his wife and music partner, Mary Ford. This home studio, originally in Paul’s Hollywood garage, is where Paul spent years perfecting his music and developing revolutionary recording techniques.
“We’ve painstakingly restored Les Paul’s original gear to working condition, allowing today’s artists to record using the exact tools that revolutionised popular music,” said Michael Braunstein, Executive Director of the Les Paul Foundation. “Combined with the newest technology and digital recording tools, the Les Paul Recording Studio will welcome musical artists, producers, engineers and students to a new and innovative studio environment that is the only one of its kind in the world.”
The Les Paul Recording Studio will offer musicians a place to record and study music, and is described as an “ideal setting for the next generation of musical artists, producers and engineers to record new music, reimagine catalogues, and find inspiration in the rich history the studio has to offer.
