“They say never meet your idols, but that’s just not true. Sometimes you get lucky”: M. Shadows reflects on interviewing Ozzy Osbourne in 2017
In the wake of Ozzy Osbourne’s passing, Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows has reflected on the time he met the metal legend, and how he was “so kind” and “such a welcoming person”.
Osbourne passed away earlier this week (22 July) at the age of 76, just a matter of weeks after the mighty Back To The Beginning farewell show from Black Sabbath. The grief of such a massive loss for the music world is being felt by fans and fellow artists all over, with many sharing their treasured tales of the time they got to meet or work with the Prince of Darkness.

In Shadows’ experience, he got to meet Osbourne in 2017 for an interview for Metal Hammer, and though nerves began to take over leading up to the big day, they instantly melted away due to his warmth and kindness.
“[We’ve] lost the man who, with his buddies, invented the whole genre of music that so many of us hold dear, so I just wanted to tell a quick story,” begins Shadows in a video shared online.
“In 2017, I got asked to go interview Ozzy Osbourne on what was to be Black Sabbath’s final tour. Of course I jumped at the opportunity, I thought it’d be great, but as the day got closer, I got more nervous. I reached out to a lot of friends, a lot of people, and got this set of questions together, and ended up going backstage to meet Ozzy.
“[I was] super nervous, [but] he just had one of those personalities where you were just completely put at ease. It was so easy to talk to him, [he was] so energetic and excited, but also engaging. I’ll never forget that experience. They say never meet your idols, but that’s just not true. Sometimes you get lucky. Ozzy, besides the music, was so kind and seemed like such a welcoming person. Rest in peace.”

Shadows interviewed Ozzy as Black Sabbath were embarking on their 2017 The End tour, which was to be their farewell at the time. Even then, when he and has bandmates were soaking in the adoration of thousands of fans attending their shows to watch their heroes bow out, Ozzy remained humble.
When the A7X man asked how he hoped Black Sabbath will be remembered, Ozzy replied: “Just the fact that we’re remembered is good enough. One of my proudest things is the fact that we weren’t created by some business guys. We were four guys, we had an idea, and it worked. Don’t give up on your dreams. Dreams are what this is all about!”
Other artists who have paid tribute to Osbourne include Metallica, Tom Morello, Kiki Wong, and Jack White. His Black Sabbath bandmates have also shared their sadness, with guitarist Tony Iommi stating,“I think he really just held out to do that [last] show. I really feel, and me and Geezer [Butler] were talking about it last night, that we think he held out to do it, and just after that, he’s done it and said goodbye to the fans.”
