The estate of Brent Hinds is reportedly suing Mastodon
After Mastodon recently gave an interview to Classic Rock speaking of their fond memories of late bandmate and guitarist Brent Hinds – who died in a motorcycle accident last year – it’s come to light that Hinds’ estate has filed a lawsuit against the band.
The filing, made at the Fulton County Court in Georgia against Mastodon members Troy Sanders, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor, cites a number of complaints, including the unauthorised use of Hinds’ likeness on the cover of their latest album Marrow Deep, that Hinds continued to have owned interest in merchandise, and that the buyout of said interests was never finalised before his death.

Hinds’ estate also alleges that the surviving members of Mastodon made claims about Hinds’ substance abuse. The complaint is made regarding private information allegedly being made public after Hinds’ death.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Hinds estate alleges that the band “selected and placed a recognisable image of Brent on the album cover of Marrow Deep and disseminated that cover to advertise, market, distribute and sell physical albums, digital downloads and streams, merchandise and related goods or services.”
Brent Hinds was a founding member of Mastodon from the band’s formation in 2000 until his death in August 2025. It was announced that he’d departed the band earlier last year.
While the split appeared mutual at the time, Hinds later made harsh comments about his former bandmates, calling them a “shit band with horrible humans”.
It’s unclear what will happen with the new lawsuit, but Hinds’ former bandmates have been remembering their time with the guitarist fondly as of late.
“He was a man scorned,” said drummer Brann Dailor recently. “He said some hurtful things, but I know he didn’t mean it.
“I was always hopeful that he was going to call me at some point and be like: ‘Dude, I’m done being a ding-dong. Can I come back? I have a riff…’ We were 100% sure he would’ve done that.”
