“When you guys played Whiplash, Kurt went insane”: Kirk Hammett recalls the time Kurt Cobain was in the mosh pit for a Metallica show

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has recalled the time Kurt Cobain came to see them perform during the touring cycle for The Black Album.
On a new episode of The Metallica Report, Hammett remembers inviting Cobain, a keen Metallica fan, to watch the band perform in Seattle.

Hammett says Cobain excitedly asked if the band was going to play Ride The Lighting or Whiplash, his favourite two Metallica songs. “I said, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to play Ride the Lightning, but we played Whiplash,” he says.
He adds: “The whole time we were playing Whiplash, Kurt was trying to get my attention. I only found out afterwards from some friends who were in the snakepit saying ‘God, when you guys played Whiplash, Kurt went insane and he was trying to get your attention the whole time. I was like ‘Really?’ I know that’s his favourite Metallica song, but wow.’”

“Kurt was great,” Hammett goes on. “He was such a great mellow guy and very fragile and vulnerable. But, at the same time, man, he had this great wit. He was a funny guy.”
Metallica’s classic self-titled album, commonly referred to as The Black Album, was released in 1991 and features the likes of Enter Sandman, Sad But True and Nothing Else Matters.

Cobain’s friendship with Metallica is well-documented. During an interview with Classic Rock in 2022, Kirk reminisced on the same Seattle show the Nirvana frontman attended.
“Kurt Cobain came to one of our shows in Seattle, on The Black Album tour,” he said. “I knew Kurt kind of well, and I hung out with him quite a bit. He was a pretty big Metallica fan. I was surprised at how much of a Metallica fan he was.”
In other Metallica news, Kirk recently chimed in on whether amps sound better when plugged into the mains in the UK or in the US.
In an interview with Total Guitar, the guitarist said: “You plug a Marshall straight into the wall in London and it will sound 30 per cent better than the same Marshall hooked up to the wall in America.
“It’s everything to do with the voltage. And it would drive me crazy because it would sound different from show to show!”
