Hear a raw new remix of R.E.M.’s Let Me In, Michael Stipe’s eulogy for Kurt Cobain
R.E.M. have released a new remix of Let Me In, a song from their 1994 album Monster that Michael Stipe wrote as an eulogy for Kurt Cobain. Watch its new lyric video by animator Nir Ben Jacob above.
Stipe – who was a close friend of Cobain’s, and is godfather to his daughter Frances Bean – wrote Let Me In in one night, he recently told the BBC, after hearing that the Nirvana frontman had taken his own life. The dissonant guitar lines on the original recording were played by R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills on Cobain’s sonic blue Fender, which his widow Courtney Love had given to the band.
Stipe’s vocals come to the forefront with new clarity on this new remix, which was crafted as part of a forthcoming reissue of Monster to mark its 25th anniversary. The most comprehensive offering of the reissue is a deluxe box set that comprises five CDs, namely the original album, a 2019 remix by Monster producer Scott Litt, previously unreleased demos, and a complete live 1995 performance in Chicago; and a Blu-ray with all six music videos from the album and the 90-minute film Road Movie which documents the band’s 1995 tour.
