The musician was speaking during a new interview when made his intentions for the future clear.
Since departing from Metallica in 2001, Newsted has gradually moved away from the metal scene and pursued a slightly different course of action for his following endeavours.
Although briefly forming his own metal band in the 2010s entitled Newsted, in which he played the role of frontman, the bassist’s main line of work since leaving the thrash icons has been with Bluegrass group The Chophouse band.
Working with the group for over thirty years, the musician confirmed in the interview that the band have recently finished a new album, meaning he can now focus on new and heavier projects.
“I spent six months of last year putting together The Chophouse Band Volume 1,” he told Gator 98.7 FM in a new Q&A session (via Metal Injection). “The Chophouse Band has been together [and] making music since 1992. So it was our first album after 30 years. I spent a lot of time on that.”
“I got that under my belt, [so] I’m kind of stepping back into the heavy now,” he continued, explaining that he has already begun forming a new, unknown band.
“The last couple of weeks I’ve been auditioning guitar players for a heavy project. I’m back on bass and singing with a metal drummer… I’m putting two new projects together right now — but loud.”
