Meet the “world’s smallest effects pedal”: “We’re aware that an overdrive pedal this tiny is a bit ridiculous”
Guitar pedal enthusiasts are always vying for a little bit more pedalboard space, and fledgling brand Olinthus hears them loud and clear. That is, because it’s just launched an overdrive pedal which it reckons is the “world’s smallest effects pedal”.
Appropriately named after a family of insects, the Cicada is certainly small, but “packs the roar of a lion”, Olinthus says.

According to Reverb, the Cicada boasts the same “rich, silky, analogue overdrive of the Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer, but in a body that could fit in your pocket”. Hell the Cicada doesn’t even need a pedalboard; just tape it right to your guitar if you like.
You might think a larger pedal means a beefier sound, but it essentially comes down to the circuitry that’s housed within. That said, the smaller size meant Olinthus had to get creative with the Cicada’s inputs and outputs. It features a three-way TRRS splitter cable, which combines standard pedal power and quarter-inch input-output cables together in one mini connection.
Indeed, the Cicada might just be the ideal stocking filler for the guitarist in your life, and at only $99, it won’t break the bank, either.
“Yes, we’re aware that an overdrive pedal this tiny is a bit ridiculous,” the brand says. “But by challenging our notions of what an effects pedal has to be, a new world of possibilities opened up that we never expected. Turns out, making it small also makes it pretty awesome.”
