Ubisoft unveils Rocksmith+, a subscription-service version of its guitar-teaching video game

Ubisoft has announced Rocksmith+, a new version of its guitar-teaching tool/video game that brings a number of new features to the hybrid rhythm game/learning app platform. Notably, Rocksmith+ will now be a subscription-based service, and launch with a song library of “thousands,” expanding out to “millions.”
The subscription model is a departure from the original Xbox 360 / Playstation 3 / PC game, which was a one-time purchase, with extra songs able to be bought as downloadable content. Like the original, however, Rocksmith+ will interact with and gamify the learning of a real guitar. Now, thanks to a companion app, that guitar can be acoustic as well as electric – the original version required the use of a ¼-inch cable to USB connection. The app, when paired with a PC or console running Rocksmith+, uses the phone’s microphone to detect playing.

The original ‘Real Tone’ quarter-inch cable can still be used on PC and console for Rocksmith+. PC users can also use an audio interface plugged into their guitar.
Rocksmith+ will arrive in the summer of this year for Windows PC, and in autumn for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Ubisoft notes that the game is set to launch with a library of “thousands of songs and grow to millions more in the future, within genres spanning from rock, classic, indie, alternative, hip-hop, pop, metal, country, Latin, R&B, and more.” There’s also Rocksmith Workshop, a new user-generated content system that allows users to add arrangements from a list of pre-licensed songs to the library.
See the trailer for the game below.

Rocksmith+ will be available for $14.99 for a 1-month subscription, $39.99 for a 3-month subscription, and $99.99 for a 12-month subscription. There’s also a limited closed beta for the PC version, which you can sign up for here.
