Watch Paul McCartney join Andrew Watt and Chad Smith onstage at intimate New York club show
What are the odds of being at an intimate gig and Paul McCartney turning up? Well, for those at the Stephen Talkhouse in New York, this is just what happened.
The Beatles legend made an appearance to perform Neil Young’s Rockin’ In The Free World and Beatles track, I Saw Her Standing There along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, producer and guitarist Andrew Watt, plus Hall & Oates guitarist G.E. Smith, bassist Ivan Bodley and vocalist Charlotte Lawrence.

The gig was hosted by Watt and Smith before a crowd of 250 attendees on 20 August. Watt has previously worked with McCartney on his contribution to the Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds album, which landed last year.
Apparently, McCartney even made the boss move of a mic drop when he finished his guest slot like he’d been in a rap battle. You can watch footage captured across the evening below:
Last October, Watt recalled the madness of working with both McCartney and the Stones. McCartney features on Hackney Diamonds track, Bite My Head Off. “Paul McCartney loves to fucking rock. So I thought, ‘Why not pick the most punk-rock fucking song – the one where everyone’s on 10 the whole time – and let these guys have the time of their lives rocking out together?’” He told Rolling Stone magazine.
“My guitar tech, Mark, put in a Univox Super Fuzz circuit into the bass, so when he hit one of the Hofner switches it gives the loudest, most wicked fuzz bass you ever heard in your life,” he shared, adding that McCartney was “crying laughing” by the end of it. “We start going for takes, Paul stands up. All of a sudden, Ron stands up, Keith stands up, Mick drags a mic into the fucking center of the room, and I swear to God, the roof left the fucking building.”
